Sexual Attitude Reassessment (SAR)

Overview

Research has shown that educators, counselors, and therapists have a lot of anxiety around sexuality. Anxiety around sexual issues and concerns can make it difficult to think clearly, to help people gain knowledge and solve problems creatively, and to act in their own best interests.

A Sexual Attitude Reassessment (SAR) workshop is one of the quickest, most effective ways to help educators, counselors, and therapists lower their anxiety and creatively reassess their attitudes and values around sexual issues. The ultimate goal of the SAR is to combat a culture based on sexual ignorance, sexual secretiveness, and sexual trauma. The SAR helps us approach this goal.

The SAR is a process-oriented, structured group experience to promote participants' awareness of their attitudes and values related to sexuality, and to assist them in understanding how these attitudes and values affect them professionally and personally. We strive to provide information that is not based on political, religious, or cultural bias or "correctness" but rather on the current scientific understanding of human sexuality. We seek to provide an opportunity for participants to explore and understand their beliefs, attitudes, values and biases within the realm of sex and sexuality from a range of perspectives.

By becoming aware of their own perceptions, reactions, feelings, and beliefs, the goal is for participants to become more comfortable with the wide variation of existing sexual attitudes, behaviors, practices, and sub-cultures. This comfort is necessary for sexual health professionals.

Note: The nature of the SAR requires that much of the media shown and discussed will be explicit.

Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the wide spectrum of human sexual experience and expression.
  2. Identify at least one area of personal sexual discomfort in working with students, participants in workshops, and/or clients.
  3. Identify at least one change in personal sexual attitudes and values as a result of the SAR.
  4. Describe at least one way in which the SAR increased personal comfort in using sexual terminology and expression.
  5. Report at least one example of increased ease and fluency in discussing sexual practices.
  6. Identify at least one ethical conflict or dilemma posed by the materials presented.
  7. Recognize at least one area where they can apply newly-gained knowledge and skills with students, participants in workshops, and/or clients.
  8. Identify at least one area of sexual discrimination occurring in our society.
  9. Describe at least one area of personal sexual bias.
  10. Explain how the SAR helped clarify at least one personal strength in the area of human sexuality.
